Dental Assisting

Mission
The mission of the Dental Assisting Program is to enlighten, challenge and prepare students in a career and profession in Dental Assisting.

Introduction
The Dental Assisting Program at Orlando Tech is accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. Graduates of the Dental Assisting Program are qualified to take the Dental Assisting National Board examination. Graduates are awarded a Florida State Expanded Functions Certificate as required by the Florida State Board of Dentistry. For more information about Dental Assisting, see the American Dental Assistants Association. Students are required to take the Dental Assisting National Board Examination for certification.

Daytime program begins in August.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED equivalent. They must meet and interview with a school guidance counselor and complete all application requirements. A FDLE criminal background check is required.

Program Information
The 1230 hour program includes infection control, dental anatomy, dental materials, chairside assisting skills, dental radiology, preventive dentistry, office emergencies and pharmacology, office management, pathology, psychology, communications and employability skills.

Students will be exposed to potential hazards.

Description
This program prepares the student for employment as a dental assistant in a dental practice. Training includes

Dental Assisting is one of the top 30 jobs for the next decade. The need for dental assisting through the year 2014 is expected to steadily increase.

Text book Information: Section 112 HEOA | Amends HEA Title I Part C (20 U.S.C 1015) by Adding Section 133
Effective: July 1, 2010. The HEOA encourages all involved parties to work together to identify ways to decrease the cost of books and supplies in order to ensure that students have access to affordable course materials. Book publishers must provide faculty or others selecting textbooks: The price at which the material would be made available to the campus bookstore. - The retail price at which books are made available to the public, if available. - The copyright dates of the three previous editions, if any. - Alternative formats available, if any, along with price information. - To the extend possible, institutions must disclose information about required textbooks and course materials, including the International Standard Book Number and price. Each institution is required to post this information on its Internet course schedule and publish a link to this information in the written course schedule. The law also encourages institutions to disseminate to students information about institutional programs that would help students save money on textbooks, such as rental programs, textbook exchange programs or buy-back programs.
