Apprenticeship
training offers individuals an opportunity to "earn while
they learn." In addition to a paid 40-hour on-the-job
training work-week, apprentices are required to attend related
training on selected evenings. Wage increases are granted as
the apprentices gain time in training and resulting experience.
WHAT IS THE CHILD CARE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM?
The Child Care Apprenticeship Program
is sponsored by industry and supported by labor and education.
It combines on-the-job training with theoretical instruction
to produce a certified Child Care Development Specialist (CCDS).
The program is approved and registered by the Florida Department
of Labor and Employment Security. The program provides on-the-job
training for apprentices, wage increases and professional development
in the child care industry.
WHO CAN BE AN APPRENTICE?

WHAT IS THE COST TO THE APPRENTICE?
No tuition charge to the apprentice.
Textbooks are loaned. Each apprentice is responsible for the
minimal cost of materials and supplies.
HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAM?
Ten courses, each six-weeks long,
for 300 hours of related classroom instruction and 4000 hours
of on-the job training. Apprenticeship usually requires
two years. Sufficient applicable credit, approved by the
committee may reduce the time to one year.
DOES THE CHILD CARE APPRENTICE PROGAM MEET
THE FLORIDA LAW FOR CHILD CARE?

The program enables employers and
employees to meet the credentialing requirements of Chapter
10M-12.002(4) (d), “Staff Credentials,” Florida
Child Care Standards (HRS). A graduate of this program will
receive the Child Care Development Specialist (CCDS) credential,
which exceed the requirements for a CDA-equivalency.
HOW DOES ONE ENROLL IN A CHILD CARE APPRENTICESHIP
PROGRAM
Orientation is held at the training
site, Orlando Tech, for applicants. Registration with the State
of Florida Department of Labor as an indentured apprentice
is required for admission to the program.
